Hawaii State Meet Recap 2023Published by
St. Louis Boys Top Punahou For State Title; Punahou Girls Win Again By Doug Binder, DyeStat Editor A dramatic close to the boys team championship at the Hawaii state meet Saturday played out in the 4x400 relay. St. Louis held a four-point lead going into the final event and needed to stay as close as possible to Punahou in order to win the title outright. Punahou won the final race in 3:23.22. St. Louis was second in 3:24.49, good enough to win the state title by two points 64-62. Punahou had won every state meet since 2017. Michael Joshua Price won the 800 meters for St. Louis, which also won the 4x100 relay. Josh Sagapolutele was third in the shot put and fifth in the discus. Josiah Fetui was second in the triple jump and William Reed took second in the high jump. The screaming fast sprint finals were all heavily wind-aided. Senior Shane Kawakami-Williams from Hawaii Baptist Academy won the 100 meters in 10.63 (+4.5w) and he also won the 400 in 48.87 seconds. Sophomore Ja'lyn Deichert from King Kekaulike won the girls 100 meters (12.13w) and 200 (25.24w). Punahou retained the girls title Nala Stojadinovic winning the 300-meter hurdles and also running a leg on the winning 4x400 relay team. Junior Mia Shepard of Iolani won the 400 meters final in 57.13 seconds. Zola O'Donnell of Mililani swept the distance races, with 10:29.79 in the 3,000 meters and 4:50.09 in the 1,500. Tatum Moku of Kamehameha repeated her pole vault title with a clearance at 12-6. Her season best of 13-7 earlier this season broke her own state record and she is currently tied for US#11.
