Keefer's heroics lead St. Michael-Albertville to title

By Mary Albl of DyeStat

It was a busy weekend for St. Michael-Albertville High's Anna Keefer. But in the end, it was all worth it.

At the Minnesota State Track and Field Championships at Hamline University in St. Paul, the senior guided her team to a 2A state title, winning the 100 (11.73) 200 (24.13), long jump (18-10.5) and running on the runner-up 4x200 relay. It was St. Michael-Albertville's first girls track title since 1998.

Earlier this spring, Keefer became the first girl to jump 20 feet in the long jump. She narrowly missed the Minnesota all-time record in the 100 and 200.

Also in 2A action, Farmington eighth grader Anna Fenske won the 1,600 in 4:55.20, while sophomore teammate Lauren Peterson won the 3,200 in 10:31.50.

The North St. Paul girls broke the all-time state record in the 4x200 relay by clocking 1:39.81.

In 2A boys action, Maple Grove senior Alex Miley won the 3,200 in 9:10.82. Eden Prairie senior Denzel Brown dominated the sprints, winning the 100 (10.50) and 200 (20.97) with a big 4+ m/s wind at his back.

In Class 1A, Plainview-Elgin-Millville boys picked up the win, scoring 58 points. Samuel Moore of Betha-Hewitt swept the throwing events, winning the shot put (59-11.75) and discus (180-6).

In girls 1A action, Tierney Wolfgram of Math & Science Academy won an impressive double in the distances, claiming the 1,600 (5:05) and 3,200 (10:41.84).
