Hirsch, Greder trade wins in Class A distance finals

Seth Hirsch and Milo Greder combined to erase Colby Wissel as the all-time record holder in Nebraska distance running.

Hirsch, who surely would have broken Wissel’s 2004 state best in the 3,200 (8:55.6) if he hadn’t fallen at Arcadia, got the record secured on May 3 at the Omaha Metro Conference Championships when he ran 8:54.12.

Greder surpassed Wissel in the 1,600 on Saturday in the state final when he ran 4:09.6, trimming eight-tenths of a second off the record.

Hirsch won the 3,200 at state in 8:57.20, while Greder was second in 9:20.69. Hirsch finished behind Greder in the 1,600, in 4:14.1.

Torrential downpours made everything wet and also messed up some of the timing at the Nebraska state meet on the final day at Omaha’s Burke High School. 

Allen Gordon from Omaha North won the high jump at 6-10 and the long jump at 22-7.50. Teammate Treyshawn Burnett won the triple jump with 48-7.75.

Aspen Rolfes of Lincoln Pius X won the Class A girls 200 (24.84c) and 400 (57.24). Lincoln East sophomore Madi Muma ran 2:13.22 for the victory in the 800. Taylor Somers of Millard South swept the Class A 1,600 (5:02.21) and 3,200 (10:52.16). 

Cameron Jurgens of Beatrice swept the Class B throws with 59-2.25 in the shot put and 183-4 in the discus.

MacKenzie Brandl of Stanton swept Class C titles in the 100 (12.44c), the 200 (25.34c) and also the 400 (56.85). Sophomore Dylan Kautz of Norfolk Catholic proved fastest in the 100 (10.84c) and 200 (22.04c).

Freshman Rylee Rice of Ainsworth put together one of the most interesting quadruples in the country – taking the Class C girls 800 (2:15.16), 1,600 (5:05.25), 100 hurdles (15.57) and 300 hurdles (44.64c). She scored all 40 of her team’s points. She PR’d by five seconds in the 800 and broke the Class C state meet record in the 1,600.

Freshman discus sensation Kalynn Meyer of Superior threw 158-3 to win her first state title in the event.

Claire Cornell of Elm Creek won the Class D long jump with 18-4.75 and also the 300 hurdles (44.94c).
